What are YouTube badges?
YouTube member badges are one of the small rewards you can offer to your channel members in exchange for their support. These little graphics ensure that they stand out from the crowd in the chat and that it is clearly visible how long they’ve been a member of your channel.
Uploading unique YouTube badges is a great way to further enhance your brand as a content creator and to make your content feel more professional.

YouTube membership perks – everything you need to know
YouTube memberships were introduced in 2018. They are similar to other creator-supporting platforms: your fans pay a recurring monthly amount to support your content creation journey. In return, they get access to some sort of unique extra content and a special badge in the live chats.
Just like how Twitch has “followers” and “subscribers”, YouTube has “subscribers” (the free option) and “members” (those who pay to support your content). To become eligible for memberships, your YouTube channel needs to meet the following requirements:
- Be in the YouTube Partner Program
- Have more than 1000 subs
- Be over the age of 18
- Don’t have a channel set to “made for kids”
- Be in an eligible country
- Don’t have many ineligible videos (marked as “made for kids” or with music claims)
Just as with any such online membership options, you are encouraged to provide perks to those who are willing to pay to support your content. Channel owners can offer a wide variety of membership perks to those who chose to support their channel.
Premium YouTube Emotes
The best YouTube Emote designs
We’ve covered the unique YouTube perk badges above but there are other benefits to consider as well. Member-only versions of Community posts, videos, livestreams and chats are all available. There are also Member Milestone Chats. These are special highlighted messages once a month to celebrate their continued membership.
There is also the Member Recognition Shelf, the dynamic graphic on top of your channel page that randomly highlights the avatars of some members. This feature is automatically turned on when you reach eight members.
The sky is the limit when it comes to custom membership perks. However, YouTube specifies some disallowed perks that you should keep in mind and avoid:
Downloads of content (including music) available on YouTube
- In-person 1:1 meetings
- Anything that one or some (but not all) of your members are chosen to get at random, including, but not limited to contests, lotteries and sweepstakes
- Perks that are marketed, directed, or targeted, to children, or that may be attractive to, or inappropriate for, children
- Perks encouraging children to ask their parents to join your channel membership
Having a good understanding of how you can reward your viewers is important when it comes to growing your community as a content creator. Another way to do so is to implement YouTube alerts and dedicated YouTube overlays to make important moments stand out even more.

Membership badges are one of the perks offered for paid memberships of a YouTube channel. Essentially, they are a token of gratitude from the content creator to those who support their work. Verification badges, on the other hand, are gray checkmarks (or music notes) reserved specifically for channels that have been manually verified by YouTube. This is not the same as having a verified account: this is a symbol of authenticity and it lets you distinguish yourself from impostors on the platform. Think CNN, Mariah Carey, this sort of level. As a baseline, YouTube requires you to have more than 100 000 subscribers and to “be authentic” and to “be complete” to get you verified.
YouTube accepts JPEG or PNG files that are less than 1MB in size. The badges will render as 14x14px images in the comments and as 16x16px in the live chat. They therefore require a minimum size of 32x32px when you upload them. OWN3D’s badge designs are made with these specifications in mind and are legible regardless of the size they’re rendered in!
YouTube offers a variety of default badges for every content creator. To take the next step, find yourself a unique and personalized membership badge that matches your style by exploring OWN3D’s store and the constantly growing selection of assets we offer!
YouTube currently offers six different badges. These display how long a member has cumulatively paid for a membership. There are separate badges for new members, 1-month members, 2-month, 6-month and 1-year members, and for the most loyal viewers out there, 2-year membership badges are also available.
